Although Virginia’s rates for prior year drug abuse or alcohol dependence have remained steadily at or below the rates for the country, the need for treatment facilities still exists. The National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (NSSATS) stated in a 2006 survey that Virginia had 196 treatment facilities; 55 were private nonprofit; 43 were private for-profit; and 70 were state-operated. In 2002, Virginia had 228 treatment facilities, however, in 2006 that number decreased to 196. This is due mainly to the loss of 13 private for-profit facilities and 26 state facilities.

The remaining facilities in Virginia offer different types of treatment care services, all designed to treat alcohol and drug addiction. In 2006, Virginia had 167 facilities that offered outpatient care; another 42 offered residential care; 20 had opioid treatment programs; plus 133 physicians and 35 treatment programs were authorized to provide buprenorphine treatment in cases of opiate addictions. In 2006, the federal, state, and local governments helped to fund 123 of Virginia’s treatment facilities, and an additional 97 facilities had agreements or contracts with managed care establishments.

The 2006 NSSATS survey showed that Virginia had a total of 22,847 clients in treatment; 21,311 were in outpatient treatment; and 2,879 of the total client number were below 18 years old. During the last 14 years, there has been a decline in the number of treatment admissions for alcohol abuse and increases in treatment admissions for marijuana and heroin abuse. While alcohol-only admissions decreased from 15 percent in 1992 to 23 percent in 2005, drug-only admissions elevated from 15 percent in 1992 to 23 percent in 2005.

Virginia’s rates for individuals needing and not receiving treatment for drug or alcohol abuse have stayed at or below the national rates. However, for age group 18 to 25, these individuals required treatment but did not receive it, hence ranking Virginia higher than other population groups and the country as a whole.

For individuals age 12-17 and 18-25, Virginia rates for prior year major depressive episode (MDE) have been above the rates for the country. In stark opposition, the rates of prior year serious psychological distress (SPD) have been among the lowest in the country. Additionally, Virginia’s treatment admissions rate for individuals suffering psychological problems related to alcohol or drug abuse has tripled since 1992.

There are many individuals who know they need treatment, and genuinely want to receive it. However, due to shame or a loss of self-esteem, they either believe they cannot win their battle or are afraid to take the first step toward recovery. Therefore, they remain untreated, while prolonging their drug or alcohol use. Individuals suffering from any kind of alcohol or drug abuse should know that treatment facilities are not provided as a means of judging them, but as a means of helping them.
