Per the Office of National Drug Control Policy, in Oklahoma, cocaine is easily accessible. Cocaine addiction is a common problem throughout Oklahoma, with crack cocaine being the most significant issue in urban areas. Conversely, in Oklahoma, the demand for heroin has declined in recent years. In the metropolitan areas of Oklahoma, Black Tar heroin is available in very limited quantities, and the availability of brown or white heroin are rare.
However, on a narcotics level, methamphetamine is Oklahoma’s greatest concern. Meth is produced in Mexico and Southwest America, and is commonly known as meth, speed, or chalk. In Oklahoma, crystal methamphetamine has risen in popularity over the past two years.
Marijuana, the most frequently used and abused drug in the country, is easily accessible; it is the most common form of drug abuse in Oklahoma. Mexican “sinsemilla,” is most often found in pressed or brick form, and is the most popular type of marijuana available in Oklahoma, especially in urban areas. Club drugs, such as GHB and Ecstasy are rampant in Oklahoma as well. There has been an increase in the abuse of club drugs, which is commonly found at rave parties in eastern and central Oklahoma. Pharmaceutically, the most frequently abused substances in Oklahoma are hydrocodone products, and oxycodone products. Additionally, Oklahoma has seen a rise in the abuse of methadone.
The 2005-2006 statistics from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), states that 224,000 of individuals age 12 or older in Oklahoma reported prior month use of an illicit drug. Furthermore, 82,000 Oklahoma citizens cited illegal drug abuse or drug dependence within the past year; 61,000 reported past year illegal drug dependence.
In 2007, 5.5% of Oklahoma high school students admitting to trying methamphetamine at least once in their lifetime (see chart below).

In an effort to combat the ever-present issue of drug and alcohol dependency, there are a number of treatment facilities in Oklahoma. The 2006 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (NSSATS) reports that there were 176 treatment facilities in 2006. Most of these facilities (109) were private nonprofit; an additional 29 were private for-profit; and 15 were owned or ran by a tribal government.
Paying attention to the needs of individuals needing alcohol and drug treatment, Oklahoma’s government and private sector organizations have implemented more treatment facilities. Consequently, the amount of treatment facilities in Oklahoma has risen from 146 in 2002 to 176 in 2006. This increase is mainly due to the addition of 10 private nonprofit facilities, and 14 for-profit facilities. In 2006, 152 Oklahoma facilities offered outpatient treatment; 47 facilities offered residential care; 8 offered opioid treatment; and 45 physicians were authorized to provide buprenorphine treatment for opiate addiction.
