As stated in the latest reporting (2005-2006) by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), Iowa’s rates of substance use and drug abuse have been ranked among the 10 states with the lowest rates. However, for individuals age 12 and older, 12 to 20, and 26 and older prior month alcohol binging in Iowa have been ranked among the 10 states with the highest rates. Illegal drug use have however been steadily ranked among the 10 lowest states for individuals age 12 and older plus 12-17. On the other hand, alcohol dependence or abuse has stayed at or above than the national rates, especially for individuals age 12 to 17, thereby increasing the need for alcohol treatment in Iowa.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues At-A-Glance

The National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (NSSATS) states that the amount treatment facilities in Iowa have stayed consistent. As of 2006, there were 125 treatment facilities; 108 were private nonprofit; and 6 were private for-profit. These facilities are equipped to handle a variation of treatment requirements, with the most common treatment being outpatient care. In 2006, 113 Iowa facilities offered outpatient treatment; 28 included residential care in their program; and 4 offered opioid to treat conditions such as heroin addiction.

The 2006 NSSATS survey also states that Iowa reflects a one-day treatment admissions total of 7,229 patients; 6,660 of these patients were receiving outpatient care while 793 patients were below 18 years of age.

Data for the last 13 years show that there has been a steady decrease in the amount of treatment admissions for alcohol abuse, shifting from 36 percent in 1992 to 54 percent in 2006. However, treatment for marijuana and methamphetamine use escalated from 4 percent in 1992 to 26 percent in 2006. The rates for alcohol-only admissions have decreased from 53 percent in 1992 to 28 percent in 2005 while drug-only admissions have risen from 6 percent in 1992 to 23 percent in 2006.

Iowa’s statistics for individuals requiring drug treatment but did not receive it in the year prior has steadily ranked among the 10 lowest states for individuals age 12 and older and 12 to 17. However, in 2005-2006, the rates of alcohol addiction and abuse have stayed at or been at or above the national rate, ranking Iowa among the highest in the country for all ages, except for individuals age 26 and older.

On a brighter note, the rates of prior year serious psychological distress (SPD) have stayed at or went below the national rates; in 2005-2006, the rates for individuals age 18 to 25 were among the 10 lowest in the country. The rates of prior year major depressive episodes (MDE) have been at or below the national rates.

Specifically, individuals requiring alcohol treatment should seek help immediately, thus increasing their well-being and lowering Iowa’s alcohol “unmet need for treatment” rate.
