South Carolina is known for the oceanic Myrtle Beach, a perfect vacation getaway spot. With regards to narcotics, a 2006 survey by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), ranked South Carolina among the 10 states with the lowest rates based on the measures shown in the chart above. The rates for illegal drug use for all age groups have been at or below the national rates. Continuing this commendable pattern, South Carolina’s rates for prior year alcohol dependence and drug abuse have been among the lowest in the country.

In 2006, there were 104 facilities in South Carolina; 27 were private nonprofit; 30 were private for-profit; and 29 were owned or ran by the state. Many of these facilities are versed in the treatment of drug and addiction, offering several programs in their treatment curriculum. In South Carolina, 92 facilities offered outpatient treatment; 23 offered residential care; 14 offered opioid treatment; and 77 physicians and 19 programs offered buprenorphine treatment for opioid addiction. 58 percent of these facilities received some funding from federal, state, or local governments, and 51 centers had agreements with managed care establishments to aid in substance abuse treatment services.

In a 2006 survey, South Carolina reflected a one-day client total of 13,436; 12,791 were in outpatient treatment, which made provisions for drug detox. Of the entire client total, 1,517 were below 18 years old. During the 15 years, the number of treatment admissions in South Carolina for alcohol has remained stable while a marked increase has presented itself in treatment admissions for cocaine and marijuana. Where alcohol-only admissions decreased from over 46 percent in 1992 to 30 percent in 2006, drug-only admissions increased from 11 percent in 1992 to 29 percent in 2006. Treatment admissions requiring both drug and alcohol treatment escalated from 6 percent in 1992 to 30 percent.

In South Carolina, the rates for individuals requiring drug-only treatment but not receiving it in the year prior varied–being among the highest in the country for individuals age 26 and older, and mirroring the statistics for the rest of the country for other age groups. However, the rates for individuals needing alcohol-only treatment but did not receive it in the year prior, have stayed at or below the national rates, especially for individuals age 12 to 17; these rates have steadily been among the lowest in the country

Treatment facilities are available for one reason–to help those who need alcohol or drug treatment. These facilities are also particularly effective is providing non-medical support to addicts. By recommending support groups and providing the patient with appropriate medication or therapy, treatment facilities can help the addict to claim victory over his battle.
