Alcohol and marijuana use oftentimes lead to an addiction to these substances, requiring the need for alcohol and marijuana treatment. Often, the initial use of these substances begins in a social environment (through experimentation), and when a dependency develops, users often didn’t see it coming. To measure each state’s rates on drug and alcohol use, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health combined the estimates from 2002-2003 with 2005-2006’s. The above chart was used to measure Minnesota’s. Consequently, Minnesota has ranked among the 10 States with the highest rates based on the above measures.

Per the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (NSSATS), in 2006, there were 263 treatment facilities in Minnesota; 140 were private nonprofit; 98 were private for-profit; the rest were either owned or operated by federal, state, or local government. The amount of treatment centers in Minnesota has remained stable since 2002.

With the nation’s rate of drug and alcohol use, drug treatment programs are essential. In 2006, Minnesota had 204 facilities that offered outpatient treatment; 112 offered residential care; 9 offered an opioid treatment program; and 57 physicians and 31 programs were authorized to offer buprenorphine treatment for opiate addiction. 143 facilities received monetary aid form the federal, state, local government and 185 centers had agreements with managed care establishments to help in supplying treatment for substance abuse.

In the 2006 NSSATS survey, Minnesota had a one-day treatment admissions total of 10,078 clients; 7,246 were in outpatient treatment; 832 were below 18 years old. In Minnesota, over the last 15 years, there has been a slight decrease in the amount of treatment admissions for alcohol dependency and a significant increase in treatment admissions for meth addiction, elevating from 1.9 percent in 1992 to approximately 18 percent in 2006. Alcohol-only treatment admissions decreased from 44 percent in 1992, to 28 percent in 2006 while drug-only treatment admissions tripled from 7 percent in 1992 to 23 percent in 2005.

Minnesota’s rates of individuals needing and not getting drug-only treatment have generally been below the national rates, but the rates for individuals needing and not receiving alcohol-only treatment have been above the national rates.

Alcohol addiction is one of the toughest addictions to sever; the user becomes so dependent on it, he or she will often become violent when under the influence or if he or she is not allowed to drink. This often leads to domestic violence. Consequently, those needing alcohol treatment should seek immediate treatment not only for their own sakes but also for the sake of their loved ones.

Minnesota’s rates for serious psychological distress (SPD) and major depressive episodes (MDE) have been at or below the national rates. Still, there is the issue of drug and alcohol use to address.
