How Do You Help Someone Who Is Self-Destructive.?

Question by becca: How do you help someone who is self-destructive.?
OK, my boyfriend has gone through more than most in his life. In the past year, he has really had his moments with depression and addiction. I have supported him emotionally the entire time, not to mention financialy for many months off and on. He finally decides to take control of his life and has been in treatment for drug/alcohol addiction for 12 days now and is doing GREAT. All of his legal issues are cleared up and he is really positive…..but today, he quit his job…..that he’s only had for a week and two days!!! I really thought he was getting it together…..but what the heck…..He said they dis-respected him….

What do I do….continue to be the supportive girlfriend being that he has/is dealing with so much…….any suggestions.

Be yourself, be kind, be open, don’t try to overcompensate, create distractions, go for a walk or hike together, cook dinner together, try to refrain from negative speech. Be supportive, don’t be critical. Reassure the friend. A good friend asks difficult questions about the depression, in hopes that the depressed friend can feel comfortable to ask for help!
